STATEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE of JOHN EMERY
February 1959 - September 1966
Senior engineering assistant with Ground Engineering Ltd - subsidiary company of John Laing and Son Ltd.
With this company he specialised in soil mechanics gaining experience in site investigations and foundation design.

Assistant Engineer with Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Partners.
Responsible for the design , preparation of contract documents and site supervision of a wide range of civil engineering projects in the UK and overseas. Assignments included:
a) A feasibility study for the Lagos to Ibadan and Ibadan to Ife roads in Nigeria, which included inspecting and reporting on the condition of 150 miles of existing roads including structural reports on some 200 culverts and bridge structures.
b) Assistant Resident Engineer on a contract for the rehabilitation of Belize International Airport where I was responsible for determining the condition of the existing lean mix concrete and asphalt runway. Also supervision and management of an expatriate and local labour force manufacturing and laying a Marshall asphalt overlay on the runway and for the construction of pavement quality concrete extensions to each end of the runway.
c) Design and field work for a new runway and ancillary works for Golden Rock Airport at St. Kitts in the Leeward Islands including a site investigation to provide information for the design of a new runway and locating materials suitable for pavement quality concrete and Marshall asphalt surfaces.
January 1972 - October 1989
Principal Engineer with the Borough Engineer's Department of Luton Borough Council.
My responsibilities included:
a) Design and supervision, as Resident Engineer, of a contract for resurfacing the runway, taxiways and apron areas at Luton Airport. This work involved assessment of existing aircraft pavements, design of a Marshall asphalt overlay to the existing aircraft pavements, preparation of specifications and contract documents and management of the contract during construction work.
b) Supervision of Civil Engineering maintenance works at Luton Airport. As part of this work, I introduced the concept of the use of concrete block paving on aircraft pavements. This form of surfacing was found to be more economical in terms of long-term life cycle costs than the Marshall asphalt and in-situ pavement quality concrete traditionally used.
c) Design, preparation of drawings, specifications and contract documents and subsequent supervision of a contract for strengthening the runway and taxiways at Luton Airport.
October 1989 - October 1991
Overseas Development Director of Hamilton Green Construction Ltd.
This included supervision, on a contract basis, of road works for various civil engineering contractors. During this period I assisted with a research project being made by British Aerospace (Military Aircraft) Ltd. into sand corrosion problems where block paving was used on aircraft pavements. I also assisted the Transport Research Laboratory with research into accelerated trafficking of block paved roads.
